Diabetes was previously regarded as a disease of the western world and the affluent. However, currently populations all over the world have been impacted by this disease and South-East Asia has become an emerging epicentre of this chronic illness. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), one fifth of all adults with diabetes in the world live in the South-East Asian region.
“Diabetes is a disease that can affect people of all strata and is a growing concern in Sri Lanka,” said Sunshine Healthcare COO Bernard Joseph. “Despite this people still pay little attention to this life changing illness. That is why Sunshine Healthcare has decided to co-sponsor a campaign to raise the awareness of diabetes amongst Sri Lankans.”
Sri Lanka is currently experiencing an epidemic of diabetes as a result of the epidemiological and demographic transitions that have interacted with lifestyle changes. It is estimated that at least 25% of the Sri Lankan population will suffer from diabetes by 2050.
