Talks by Dr. Nina Bailey, nutrition scientist

Lady Ridgeway Hospital, The General Hospital, the Kandy General Hospital and Gpristine Ltd will be hosting a series of one hour talks by Dr. Nina Bailey, nutrition scientist from USA on topics pertaining to nutritional development. Dr Bailey is a nutrition scientist whose efforts are concentrated within the role of dietary health and nutritional intervention in disease, with particular emphasis on the role of essential fatty acids in inflammatory disorders. Dr Bailey received her PhD in Cell Biology from Cambridge University. Her doctoral research was conducted under the supervision of Professor Sheila Bingham at the Dunn Human Nutrition Unit, Cambridge.  She also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from Roehampton University, London. On Monday 17 March, she will speak at Lady Ridgeway Hospital from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon at presentation presided by Prof H. Perera. Dr. Bailey’s talk will be useful to Pediatricians, Psychiatrists, Nutritionists and Public. Dr Bailey’s presentation will cover the impact of diet in neurodevelopmental disorders; elimination diets - what to exclude; gluten, lactose and leaky gut; omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and ADHD; the effects of EPA and DHA: shared or complementary?; Fish vs fish oil and why supplementing is best and clarifying treatment protocols: what the evidence shows us. On Tuesday 18 March from 11 am to 12 Noon, Dr. Bailey will speak at a presentation presided by Director Cardiology Dept General Hospital Dr. R. Ekanayake with focus on cardiologists. Dr Bailey’s presentation will cover from the Inuit to present times: the history of omega-3 in cardiovascular health; optimising the omega-3 index for reducing CVD risk; the role of inflammation and the AA to EPA ratio in CVD ; the effects of EPA and DHA: shared or complementary?; Fish vs fish oil and why supplementing is best. On Thursday March 20 Dr. Bailey will travel to Kandy for a presentation from 11.00 a.m. to 12 noon to psychiatrists. Dr Bailey’s presentation will cover: From the Inuit to present times: the history of omega-3 in mental health; The role of inflammation, the HPA-axis and the AA to EPA ratio in mood disorders; Fish vs fish oil and why supplementing is best; The effects of EPA and DHA: shared or complementary? and clarifying treatment protocols: what the evidence shows us Aim of Dr. Nina’s initiative is to provide health education in a sustained manner which will enlighten an average citizen so that he/she is capable of making the right choices to benefit their own health.
