Major General Dr. Sanjeeva Munasinghe mentioned that this was a very rare opportunity to capture all the medical staff within the Sri Lankan armed forces in one session and said it was a great opportunity to have all stakeholders within the medical system of the military involved to understand the process of the management of trauma.
It has been a longstanding need to help personnel of the armed forces who have been affected by the war to live normal lives through rehabilitation. Trauma management is a collaborative effort which has different functionalities in handling a patient’s physical and mental wellbeing.
One of the objectives of the program is to create better awareness on trauma management within the medical profession and knowledge-sharing, helping those affected to be better prepared for disaster management. As the principal coordinator, the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corp invited the three armed forces and the police department to participate in this program. Due to the magnitude of the program, SingHealth flew down specialized medical consultants and paramedical stuff, who conducted the workshop to over 100 service personnel which includes medical doctors and nursing staff.
The Trauma Workshop was conducted by Prof. Anantharaman on Emergency Medicine – Trauma Management, Prof. Andrew Tan, Dr. Sean, Prof. Arjandas, Dr. Goh Yaw Chong on Orthopaedic, Dr. Leo Kah Woon, Prof. Tan Kok Chai, Prof. Foo Chee Liam on Reconstruction whereas the Nursing and Allied Health Workshop comprised topics such as nursing management of chest trauma, physiotherapy management post trauma and fracture and nursing management.
