UK Professor of Immunology to deliver series of lectures in Sri Lanka

Professor Nelson Fernández, Professor of Immunology at the University of United Kingdom, is due to visit Sri Lanka next month to deliver a series of lectures on Human Feto-maternal Tolerance. The lectures will be held in Colombo and Kandy on 9 and 10 June respectively. This program is being organised by Ceylon Overseas Services Ltd. in collaboration with Professor Fernández. Professor Fernández is a well-experienced researcher and a lecturer of immunology in the UK. He did his BSc degree at the Kings’ College of University of London, and completed his MSc at the Brunel University. He did his PhD on immunology at the Royal London Hospital, University of London. He worked for several years in the field of transplantation immunology supported by the Medical Research Council, MRC. The objective of his visit and the sequence of events are to raise awareness on the field of reproductive immunology, exchange views, promote post-graduate teaching exchanges and seek possibilities of developing collaborations and the sharing of his professional knowledge with Sri Lanka. This lectures covers the understanding of spontaneous and early stage miscarriages prevailing clinical problems likely be caused by abnormal immunological interactions. Furthermore, in IVF clinics, histocompatibility molecules might in the future be important biomarkers that could determine the success or failure of IVF interventions for sub-fertile couples.
