Minister of Science, Technology, Research, Skills Development, Vocational Training and Hill Country Heritage Dr. Sarath Amunugama summoned the Principals (Directors) of the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) and the Department of Technical Education and Training (DTET) to his Ministry and gave them directions on how the vocational training courses should be updated in accordance with the current needs of the country and the country’s development effort.
During the course of a detailed discussion the Minister directed the officials in regard to the following three matters:
1. Doubling the intake of trainees for the training courses;
2. Reformulating the training courses up to international standards in accordance with the requirements of the labour market, the country’s current needs and the country’s development effort;
3. Dropping courses of training that are not in accordance with current needs.
The Minister directed that he be given a report within two weeks on the progress of implementing these courses of action.
