The conducting of examinations in the Construction Skills Test under Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Programme of Japan, was launched on 01 December in Sri Lanka marking a significant step in opening up new employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Japanese job market.
Specified Skilled Worker is a status of residence for foreign nationals to engage in jobs that require specified skills in identified industry fields to bridge the shortage of workers in the Japanese labour market.
In a collaborative effort, the Sri Lanka Embassy, Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), have successfully worked together with Japanese stakeholders to open new avenues for Sri Lankans seeking employment in Japan. This collaboration underscores the commitment to strengthen bilateral ties with Japan and create pathways for Sri Lankans to contribute to country’s foreign exchange remittances keeping in line with the Government initiatives to increase overseas job opportunities for Sri Lankans.
With this addition, 4 categories will be open for Sri Lankans to qualify under the SSW Programme which comprises of 12 categories. The Aviation sector, scheduled to commence in March 2024, promises additional opportunities under this programme. Up to now, exams in Nursing Care, Food Service Industry and Agriculture categories have been conducted in Sri Lanka. Ongoing efforts of the Embassy with the close support and coordination of Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment and the SLBFE aim to obtain job opportunities in the fields such as Automobile Repair and other SSW categories as well.
