One of the top business professionals from Kandy – Gowri Rajan the Director/CMO of Sun Match company, the market leader Soorya brand and Sun Aqua bottled drinking, was awarded the Management Excellence Award for ‘Best Women in Management’ Industry sector by the Chartered Institute of Management inaugural awards for Sri Lanka.
When Daily FT contacted Rajan she said, “I dedicate this award to my staff who are behind the production lines, who manufacture the first wax coated safety matches, pack them to the corrugated cartons and ship them to the distributors who make the product available at a retail outlet via our dedicated sales team, so that a housewife can buy them at arm’s reach.”
Gowri Rajan was the first female Sri Lankan Governor for Rotary Sri Lanka and Maldives and was selected by Rotary International as the top 150 ‘Service Above Self’ awardee. Thereafter she has served many Global Rotary projects including being the Global President’s representative to Australia, Taiwan, India, which is an honour given by Rotary to a select few outstanding leaders globally.
A World Bank (IFC) and WIM ‘Outstanding Career Professional’ award winner twice, Gowri has also led her organisation to many awards from the National Chamber of Commerce and International Chambers for business as a business personally hailing from the hill country capital – Kandy.
Apart from her business contribution, Rajan’s outstanding passion to serve people was recognised by Rotary International where she has served in the global committee and continues to do so.
The dynamic young entrepreneur commenting on the macro picture of the country said, “Sri Lanka growing at just 3% plus GDP means that it needs a strong robust development agenda in the next couple of years if we are to make the country grow by 6-7% GDP growth so that it carve out a niche in the global market place.”
“I am happy to state that Rotary International has invested almost $ 3.9 million in the last five years and will continue its thrust for investing on Sri Lanka in addition to the Polio eradication drive, the 1st Human Heart Valve Bank and the Cervical Cancer projects that have been launched,” added Rajan.
