Bringing in teams from a wide spectrum of industries and corporates onto one dynamic platform of friendly competition and knowledge-sharing, the much-awaited Bristol Brain Battle 2020 took place at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo on 3 March.
With 40 teams competing in the five-round quiz, the competition was an eventful gathering of enthusiastic teams with five members each from a large variety of companies all vying for the trophy.
The event kicked off with a motivational speech from Imran Furkan, CEO of Tresync, a consulting company focused on the APAC region. He spoke on the value and significance of maintaining a high level of general knowledge, which can be a key differentiator when seeking employment from high-performing companies. He congratulated the teams and their companies for investing time and effort in taking part in a competition of this nature which fosters the spirit of camaraderie, friendly competition and collective fun amongst corporate entities of Sri Lanka’s business community.
The quiz master, Senior Manager of Employer Branding and Engagement at Pearson, Marcom strategist, copywriter and trainer Shehan Kumar, set an invigorating pace for the competition, taking the teams through the questions which comprised a wide variety of topics including geography, sports and entertainment, business, economics, marketing, world facts, world politics, creative arts, history and travel.
Multiple industries competed head on, ultimately culminating with 12 category winners. SriLankan Airlines bagged the Travel sector award, Amana Takaful the prize for the Insurance sector and PWC for Accounts and Audit, while MAS Bodyline won in the Apparel category.
SAGT carried away the award for the Transport and Logistics sector, with Dialog clinching the award for the Telecom sector and Holmes Pollard for Advertising. Hemas bagged the FMCG sector accolade, Acuity Knowledge Partners for the Open Category, 99x Technology for IT and Software and People’s Bank for Banking and Finance.
The overall winner was Dialog, with the teams from HNB and People’s Bank receiving second and first runners-up trophies respectively.
Presenting the awards to the winning teams, Bristol Institute of Business Management’s Chief Operating Officer M.J.M. Dilshad congratulated all the winners while emphasising the importance of establishing a platform for corporates to come together to celebrate knowledge-sharing. “Sri Lanka’s corporate sector is brimming with talent and this is what inspired us to launch Bristol Brain Battle. Today’s success reinstates that inspiration for us to make this competition an annual calendar event,” he affirmed.
As such, this power-charged event will now be one which corporate sector personnel can now look forward to on a yearly basis, to pitch their knowledge against each other, to network and compete with fellowship, team spirit, goodwill and respect.
Illustrating how higher education institutes could help their students respond to the forces of disruptive innovation, Bristol Institute once again set the stage through the Bristol Brain Battle to showcase how institutions could move forward in innovative ways to produce the movers and shakers that businesses and corporates badly need to propel industries forward during the next decade.
