The nearly 83-year-old Rotary Club of Negombo – one of the leading charity clubs in the country –has planned to organise a mega event titled ‘Power Woman’, drawing over 5,000 working and non-working women from across the country to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, at the Avenra Garden Hotel complex in Negombo.
‘Power Woman’ is to be the Rotary Club of Negombo’s fundraiser, and the ticketed event will be graced by the current Mrs. World 2019, Caroline Jurie with three prominent women speakers who will speak on women’s social, educational, political and psychological empowerment.
Court of Appeal Judge Kumudini Wickramasinghe, Rotary Sri Lanka past District Governor Gowri Rajan, and Ashcharya Peiris (the only Sri Lankan woman on BBC’s 2019 list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world) will grace the event as Guests of Honour.
This year, International Women’s Day will focus on the theme ‘An equal world is an enabled world’.
It offers an opportunity to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
The mega event will mainly focus on the objective to recognise working women and to empower them to play an important role in employment and, in general, in society. The event is meant to connect the women professionals of different fields to inspire them into becoming effective allies in taking action towards including women in our male-dominated community in a more meaningful manner.
The trade fair planned at Power Woman will also offer the opportunity for the small-scale self-employed women to showcase their products to the participants within the hotel premises in separate booths as an economic empowerment initiative.
While the trade fair will continue till midnight, the Rotary Club of Negombo has also planned to conduct a ‘Women’s Empowerment’ seminar coupled with high tea in the Avenra Arena hall, commencing at 3 p.m. The high tea and seminar will further attract over 1,000 professional women from all over the country to take part in this most elegant event on International Women’s Day.
The event is a full-day program and will commence at 9 a.m., where the complex will also have the trade fair, consisting of leading brands and services which exclusively cater to women and girls, which will operate till dawn. All women’s associations of leading girls’ schools in the area and the Rotary District, which consists of 70 clubs island-wide, will be taking part at Power Woman 2020.
