University of Colombo MBA Alumni Association AGM tomorrow

The MBA Alumni Association, University of Colombo will hold its 24th Annual General Meeting on 8 July at 6 p.m.  

Dialog Axiata PLC Director/Chief Executive Officer Supun Weerasinghe will attend this event as the Chief Guest. 

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Colombo, Senior Professor Chandrika N. Wijeyaratne, the Patron of the Association, will attend as the Guest of Honour. The Dean of the Faculty of Management and Finance Prof. Pradeep Dharmadasa, Registrar of the University of Colombo K.A.S. Edward and the lecturers of the Faculty of Management and Finance will also be present. 

The Annual General Meeting is undoubtedly the pinnacle of the association’s membership calendar where the current President after a year’s administration, hands over to a new incumbent to carry on the affairs of the association. The primary function at the AGM is to elect new office bearers and an Executive Committee for the coming year 2021 / 22.  

The current President Ranga Ratnayake will preside over the official functions of the AGM where he would be handing over the mantle of office to the President-elect Boshan Dayaratne to take over as President for the year 2021 / 22. 

During President Ranga Ratnayake’s tenure under the theme of ‘Embracing the Agile Revolution,’ the association organised many programs for the benefit of their members, university students and society. The flagship event of the association is its Budget Forum which was held in November 2020. It created a platform to provide insights to the business community and general public on the Government Budget constructed by policymakers. 

Further it organised a couple of evening forums on timely topics which provided more professional and expert analysis to interested parties. 

During the year the association introduced a co-branded Affinity Credit card exclusively for its members with special benefits. Overall, despite being a challenging year, the association made its presence felt and made its contribution known to its members, the university and society at large.

For the first time in the association’s history, the 24th AGM will be held in a fully virtual mode, where online participation will enable greater participation of members both locally and overseas.

The Annual General Meeting is also the event that members look forward for an opportunity to meet their batch-mates and other members for friendly exchanges and relaxation, recreation and refreshment. Unfortunately members will lose opportunity for fellowship and networking amongst the members this year as restrictions of physical presence will be in force in consideration of the safety and wellbeing of the members. 

The MBA Alumni Association of University of Colombo is an active body with a membership base of around 700 plus members from diverse professional and academic fields. It carries out events of national importance bringing together the academia, corporates and the public sector. 

The annual budget seminars organised by the MBA Alumni Association have been well regarded by the corporate community in Sri Lanka. Both the last pre and post budget sessions were chaired by the Minister of Finance along with the senior Treasury officials, corporate sector, and a wide cross section of the public.

The association has become a vibrant entity in Sri Lanka and it seeks to build close ties with the University of Colombo and assist it to raise the bar of the MBA program on par with international standards.
