Industry advancement is one of the main focus areas of Access Engineering PLC’s philosophy towards corporate social responsibility and one of the most pressing issues currently prevalent in the construction industry is the dearth of skilled workmen.
In response to this matter, Access Engineering successfully organised and concluded a program in partnership with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), where rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres from the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre were trained in masonry and carpentry to help them reintegrate into society while adding skilled labour to the construction industry.
The apprenticeship program began on 13 June 2013 and trained 14 persons in masonry and another 17 persons in carpentry. The program was well received by participants as they showed much interest during training.
The NVQ framework provides persons who have undergone formal institutional training and competencies acquired through informal non-institutional means with a nationally recognised certificate.
The training methods received are prepared from the contribution of professionally competent personnel in the industry that confirms necessary skills are obtained for relevant occupations. Therefore, NVQ certificate holders posses many benefits including the high potential for both local and foreign employment.
In addition to initiating and assisting in the training program, Access Engineering also provided toolkits for trainees at the certificate awarding ceremony that was held on 29 October 2013 at the Institute of Engineering Technology premises in Katunayake.
Deputy Minister of Education and Monitoring MP of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development Mohan Lal Grero was the chief guest while Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development K.A. Thilakerathna, Chairman of NAITA Chandana Arunadeva, Director General of NAITA Pradeepa Udakara and officials from NAITA as well as Directors of Access Engineering, Christopher Joshua, Rohana Fernando and Dharshana Munesinghe were also present at the ceremony.
