The Chief of the Labour Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain, known as the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), Ausamah bin Abdullah Al-Absi and delegation visited Sri Lanka, recently, in order to discuss and to strategise the most efficacious courses of action to secure semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled employment for Sri Lankans in the Kingdom of Bahrain. During this visit, Al-Absi had comprehensive and highly focused discussions with Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorala, Ministry Secretary G S Withanage, and SLBFE Chairman R K Obeyesekera as well as with other senior most officials of the Ministry and of the Bureau.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr A. Saj U. Mendis, met with Chief of the Bahrain Labor Authority (LMRA) Ausamah bin Abdullah Al-Absi last week, at the Corporate Head Office of Labour Authority (LMRA) to have a briefing as well as to discuss the follow-up action in the context of the constructive and productive visit to Sri Lanka. Whilst Al-Absi much appreciated the coordination, meetings and deliberations with the key stakeholders of the foreign labour market in Sri Lanka including the Minister and senior most officials of the Ministry and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), he added that the discussions focused on ways to reduce the high cost of recruitment, elimination of unscrupulous recruitment agents in the sphere of foreign recruitment of Sri Lankans to Bahrain, potentiality of Sri Lankan expatriate workers in the province of semi-skilled and skilled in the Kingdom, adhering of ethical and legal recruitment procedures and increasing of market share of Sri Lankan expatriates in Bahrain, among others. Al-Absi submitted a proposition to the Sri Lankan side to initiate a pilot project to recruit skilled and highly skilled as well as semi-skilled Sri Lankans, thus ensuring the intrinsic rights and dignity of the potential employees. He further discussed, in detail, of the rights of migrant workers, measures to counter human trafficking, and extending of facilities for potential expatriate workers in order to acclimatise them to the Kingdom, among others.
Al-Absi reiterated that recruitment of Sri Lankan human resources to the Kingdom of Bahrain would be mutually beneficial since the Sri Lankan workers/employees have made a positive impact and impingement among the employers and authorities of Bahrain. He added that Sri Lankan semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled employees are much liked since they are highly competent, committed, dedicated and honest compared to their counterparts from other countries. On this note, Al Absi expressed his firm conviction to pursue and to recruit more Sri Lankans to the Kingdom. Al-Absi handed over to Ambassador Dr Mendis the signed minutes of the agreed new initiatives/arrangements between the Labour Authority of Bahrain and SLBFE, which he stated should be implemented at the earliest convenience, thus mutually benefiting both the countries.
