With the steep expansion of banking activities in the country many of the banks are facing a shortage of staff to cater to their increasing customers and man the bank branches being established throughout the country.
As a solution to this problem, the leading State Bank, the Bank of Ceylon has recruited 1,800 trainee staff assistants. A function to award appointment letters to these new recruits was held at Temple Trees on Tuesday under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The new trainee assistants are to be deployed at 602 BOC branches throughout the country. The new recruits have been chosen from 97,000 applications received for these posts.
The Bank sources said that they currently have close to 10 million customers (nearly half the population) and the assets of the Bank has increased to over Rs. One trillion. They said that since 2005, the BOC staff and the branches both have almost doubled due to rapid development taking place in the country under the leadership of President Rajapaksa..
President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Senior Minister for International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister for Finance and Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama addressed the function. The Chairman of the BOC President Counsel Razik Zarook, officials of the Bank and the parents of the new recruits also attended the function.
