  • To focus on Intelligence through insights: From performance to dominance
The Management Accounting Conference, themed this year as ‘Intelligence through insights: From performance to dominance’ is a much-anticipated flagship event of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Sri Lanka. The conference is set to take place on 15 August at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The objective of this forum is to create a platform to discuss contemporary development in management accounting and their relevance to businesses from a local context. Malcolm Furber, keynote speaker of the conference will be sharing his views on the topic ‘Intelligent foresights through predictive analytics,’ which will provide an overview of how modern day businesses, operating in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world have to remain agile to respond to changes which affect their business models, the requirement of a great level of understanding about the environments in which organisations operate, and use of more forward looking data and information than in the past, to enable firms to achieve sustainability. More specifically, it will also highlight  the coupling of faster ‘close to disclose’ processes with the advent of ‘big data,’ which are predictive methods for determining what could happen in the future at an alarming rate. This session with Malcolm Furber will help participants gain an appreciation of the methods and techniques being applied by companies around the globe and the application of a management accountant’s role in this space. Malcolm trained with ICI in the UK qualifying as a Chartered Management Accountant in 1978 and has undertaken post qualifying studies in marketing at Bradford University, international management trends at Princeton (USA) and strategic management courses at SBL/UNISA and the London Business School. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, (CIMA), and the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa. He is a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (UK) and a member of the South African Institute of Management. Malcolm has been in consulting for the last nine years and a regular speaker globally on integrated business planning and performance management, predictive analytics using big data, supply chain management and activity-based costing much of which is based on personal case studies rather than pure theory.
