Thanuja, Tracy and Tehani     Citi Sri Lanka celebrated International Women’s Day by joining Citi worldwide to honour women at the forefront of progress and diversity under the theme ‘Connecting Women. Inspiring Change. Making Progress’. To mark the significance of the occasion, Citi Sri Lanka will stage an original play today, entitled ‘Wonder Woman’, which explores the issues faced by women. Performed for the first time by Mind Adventures, an experimental theatre company which is recognised as one of Sri Lanka’s leading English theatre companies, the play is scripted and directed by celebrated theatre personality Tracy Holsinger. The play also features a cast comprising actresses who have all established a formidable presence in current day theatre, namely Tracy Jayasinghe, Thanuja Jayawardene, Tehani Chitty and Tracy herself. The light-hearted social satire revolves around a creative team from an advertising agency working on the campaign for Wonder Woman magazine’s 75th anniversary. “As they explore the magazine issue’s theme of, ‘Making it Happen’ and plan the visuals, they find themselves confronting the reality of their circumstances, in comparison to the image of the ideal woman as defined by the media,” said Holsinger. Using vignettes highlighting women in varied roles, whether conventional, expectational, aspirational, multi-tasking, traditional and even self-valuing, Wonder Woman explores issues women face in today’s context using real life experiences. Holsinger creates comedy sketches, monologues, satire and lots of humour to reveal challenges and triumphs that women have experienced. The play prompts pertinent questions, allows women in the audience too to interact and identify with these everyday experiences and creates a thought framework that adds dignity, confidence and strength to today’s woman. ‘Wonder Woman’ will be performed at the Oak Room of the Cinnamon Grand on 24 March for Citi female staff and clients and promises to be an evening of fun and entertainment, but one which will have an overarching message of empowerment for the multi-tasking woman of today.
