EU and Peradeniya Uni. launch two Erasmus Mundus higher education program partnerships

The European Union and the University of Peradeniya are celebrating the launch of two new Partnerships under the EU sponsored Erasmus Mundus program. The partnerships will open up a mobility scheme offering scholarships and fellowships for up to 25 Sri Lankan students, researchers and university staff in 2013 and 2014. Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility program funded by the European Union in the field of higher education. Its goals are to enhance the quality of education and promote dialogue between people and cultures through collaboration amongst universities and research institutes of different countries. The program offers scholarships to students, researchers and university staff to carry out study at bachelor, master, doctoral or post-doctoral levels in a pool of top quality European universities. Assistance provided comprises integrated packages, covering visas, travel and insurance costs as well as substantial allowances, ranging from Rs. 170,000 to Rs. 500,000 a month. Since the start of the program in 2004, 142 Sri Lankan students, researchers and staff have already benefited from the program with the award of Erasmus Mundus scholarships, fellowships and other short term assignments. Beyond the University of Peradeniya, its Sri Lankan partners also include the University of Colombo and the International College of Business and Technology. This EU program comes in addition to other mobility programs sponsored by single EU member states, making the EU one of the biggest contributors of higher education scholarships in the world. The event will be chaired by the Dean Faculty of Arts University of Peradeniya. It will be attended by a representative of the European Union Delegation in Sri Lanka and the President the Sri Lankan chapter of the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association, who will give a joint presentation about the avenues offered by the Erasmus Mundus program. An audience of senior lecturers, researchers and students is expected to benefit from the information session.
