Over the decades, business competitive advantage has moved from physical assets to intellectual and ethical assets. Understanding of the key driver of corporate growth is the most important and it is possible by appreciating the myths and the realities about innovation. Finding a solution to the problems in the process of innovation requires creativity which is inextricably linked with innovation. It covers a practical application of a marketable invention. However, innovation is possible without a prior invention. The depth of innovation is more than materializing the combination of scientific, technological, organisational, financial and commercial aspects of the industry. Boards need to understand the depth of systematic innovation as it begins with analysis of sources of new opportunities for a greater output. Taking the current business arena to consideration The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID)  will host a Power Evening on “Board Leadership of Innovation” - Getting the edge over competition through Value Innovation, scheduled for 28 October from 5 to 7 p.m. (registrations and refreshments from 4:30 p.m.) at the Ivy Room of the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo. (Gopal) Gopalakrishnan, who is a Non-Executive Director of the Tata Group Parent, Tata Sons, and several Tata companies, and an Independent Director of Akzo Nobel India, Castrol India, and Hemas PLC Sri Lanka, will address the gathering of his thoughts and experiences. He is an engineer and a renowned speaker and has immense experience in marketing and corporate management. Gopalakrishnan frequently delivers lectures at various forums and associations and is a winner of many awards. He retired from executive positions in Tata in 2011. He has been a professional manager since 1967 and has had 31 years in Unilever and 16 years in Tata. Over the last 25 years, he has served in Jeddah as Chairman of Unilever Arabia, in Bangalore as Managing Director of Brooke Bond Lipton, and as Vice Chairman of Hindustan Lever and in Mumbai as Executive Director of Tata Sons Ltd. He is a Past President of the All India Management Association. He has authored best-selling books, ‘The Case of the Bonsai Manager,’ ‘When the Penny Drops,’ ‘What the CEO really wants from you’ and ‘A comma in a sentence’.
