The second round of The Great HR Debate 2015, organised by IPM Sri Lanka, the premier professional body for Human Resources Management in Sri Lanka, was held on 29 May at the IPM Members Lounge of ‘HR House’ in Colombo.
Veterans in their particular industries, Virtusa Ltd., GlaxoSmithKline Ltd., Sampath Bank Plc and Pan Asia Bank Plc emerged as the winners of their respective debates, which were hotly-contested, securing places in the semi-finals which will be held on 8 June.
The panel of judges for the second round comprised Sunil Dissanayake – Director General of BMICH/Honorary Member of IPM, Dyan Seneviratne – Chief Executive Officer, IPM Sri Lanka, Dr. Prasadini Gamage – Senior Lecturer at the Department of Human Resource Management of the University of Kelaniya and Tyronne Ockersz – Business Unit Head of Hayleys Industrial Solutions Ltd.
The semi-finals of The Great HR Debate 2015 will also be held at the same venue and the first debate between Virtusa and GlaxoSmithKline, on the topic ‘Sri Lankan organisations can achieve success by adopting the job-for-life concept instead of the hire-fire concept’, will kick-off at 6.30 p.m. with the former proposing the topic.
This will be followed by the debate between Sampath Bank and Pan Asia Bank. The topic of this debate is ‘The role of trade unions can be replaced with Joint Consultative Councils’ with Sampath Bank being the proposer.
“The first and second rounds of The Great HR Debate 2015 have been extremely stimulating and interesting. The quality of the debates and the arguments and justifications being brought out shows the maturity of the participants,” said IPM Sri Lanka President Rohitha Amarapala.
“We expect two keenly-contested semi-final debates and we wish all the semi-finalists well,” he added.
The winners of the two semi-finals will clash for the coveted The Great HR Debate 2015 Trophy on 16 June at the sessions of the National HR Conference 2015, South Asia’s largest HR conference, at the BMICH.
IPM was founded in 1959 and was subsequently incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976. The institute is the leading Human Resources authority in Sri Lanka and has contributed significantly to developing and nurturing the Human Resource Management profession in the country.
IPM Sri Lanka is affiliated to the Asia Pacific Foundation of Human Resources Management and also to the World Federation of People Management Association. IPM, being a professional institute, is also a constituent member of the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA) Sri Lanka.
Currently, IPM comprises over 900 professional members who serve in both public and private sector organisations as well as roughly 7,000 students who follow diverse programs on human resources offered by IPM and its regional study centres throughout the country.
