Holcim Lanka recently donated 39 sets of drawing tool kits to the first batch of engineering students enrolled at the Jaffna University as a part of its drive to support training and education in the field of cement and concrete. The opening of an engineering faculty at University of Jaffna has been planned since 1979 but was never accomplished due to the war. Since the cessation of the violence, the project was recommenced and is now opened its doors to its first batch of engineering students. The main objective of the course is to produce skilled professionals to help develop different industries and the country as a whole.   In order to successfully complete their education the students require a box of drawing tools comprising an instrument box, scale, set square, drawing clips and erasing shield and it is this set of instruments that Holcim Lanka has donated to the University. Speaking about the donation University of Jaffna Dean – Faculty of Engineering Dr. A. Atputharajah said, “Our syllabuses teach the students to work on national development. The specialty of the professionals who are now being educated is that they are being taught with common knowledge which enables them to be practical. Their practical mindsets will help them work according to industry norms where sustainable development can be easily achieved. In fact this is an added value to our students. Holcim has always been a key player of the nation building effort and we are privileged to partner with them.” Explaining Holcim Lanka’s intention behind assisting the University, Holcim Lanka Vice President Marketing & Sales Nalin Karunaratne said, “This is the first Civil Engineering batch of the University of Jaffna and we want the children of North and East to stay close to home and be able to study in their own territory. By helping them with their requirements we could enable the Jaffna University to have a smooth running operation, thereby helping the students of the University to complete their studies. These students are the next generation who will help build this country and we are proud to have played a part in empowering them to achieve their dreams.” Holcim (Lanka) Limited currently holds a long term partnership with the Engineering Faculties of University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa and University of Ruhuna since the year 2013 in support of promoting joint research and development. Holcim Lanka has always been recognised as a knowledge provider to the market through its Innovation and Application center which is the only accredited concrete lab in Sri Lanka. Through this Holcim creates a hub of knowledge sharing led by a dedicated and motivated team of engineers working strongly to share knowledge.
