The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) Sri Lanka Branch has organised a seminar on ‘General Average and its Implications’ on 3 July at the Galadari Hotel Colombo. Considering certain developments that took place in the local shipping industry in the not so distant past wherein three vessels had declared ‘General Average’ subsequent to accidents involving the respective vessels; it is deemed timely to organise a seminar of this nature firstly to create an awareness of the subject among the users of shipping services and secondly to educate them on its implications. It is a fact that the subject of ‘General Average’ is alien to most of the stakeholders in the local shipping industry. Therefore, it is believed to be very relevant in today’s context and thus the Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers – UK has resolved to organise this seminar in a timely manner. Ideally, the following two renowned speakers who are specialists on the subject matter have been lined as resource personnel. In his career as loss adjuster and claims Manager, Alex has been involved in a number of multiple-bill of lading salvage and General Average cases, missing vessel, piracy and fraud cases. He has also been involved in the casualty management of a number of large marine losses for hull underwriters and cargo underwriters. He also oversees the Group’s Risk Management and Marine Surveying activities in the region.
