Following popular demand for the Preliminary Certificate of Computing (PCC) introduced by the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), the institute has commenced the intake for the second batch of PCC students. With the number of students for the second batch being increased since its first intake, IIT plans to commence classes for the PCC this month. As a result of Information Technology (IT) playing a pivotal role in empowering and shaping the world we live in today, the demand for IT knowledge has increased over the years. Following the rapid evolution of IT, employers and industries are demanding an IT literate workforce. This latest addition to IIT’s study programs is a unique six month course which will cater to those seeking an all-round IT experience and for those looking forward to acquiring a valid and recognised IT qualification. Altogether it’s an essential qualification for students interested in moving towards successful, professional careers containing all the basic IT, mathematics, communication skills and digital life skills necessary for today and tomorrow. The PCC qualification will also further strengthen students who plan on going into any major industries as IT plays a pivotal role in many companies around the globe. PCC is a pre-foundation program, which allows the student following it to earn exceptions on their foundation course at IIT. The student will be able to receive exemptions for six months of IIT’s one year foundation program. This also means that the student will not be paying for the course content he gets exemptions for. Thus the PCC will save the student valuable time and up to 50% of the foundation cost. Apart from being a standalone qualification which will help students following higher education in other disciplines, the PCC will also act as a pre-qualification to prospective students who intend to follow BEng (Hons) Software Engineering and the BSc (Hons) Information Systems with Business Management internal degrees from the University of Westminster (UOW) offered at IIT. “There is no doubt that we live in a Digital World. All aspects of our lives are adapting to this new trend, for e.g. communication, education, entertainment, business and many others. If a person is intending to follow a path of higher education, be it in Engineering, Science, Management, Medical Science, Social Sciences or any other field, he or she will require basic digital skills for survival. The Preliminary Certificate in Computing (PCC) is designed to provide basis digital life-skills that any person will need, for the rest of their lives,” said Dr. Ajith Maudrapperuma, Consultant at IIT who helped in designing and developing this program. “Today, organisations are in the look-out for employees who are equipped with digital life-skills. Students of the course will have the skills in basic programming, web design and graphic design giving them an opportunity to start their career. Other life skills such as communication skills and mathematical foundation will considerably increase the value of participants. They can start working and then follow a programme of higher studies as part-time students while earning a salary,” he said. The PCC which has been engineered to bridge the gap between school and university education, is the ideal stepping stone for students who are after A/Level or O/Level and are aspiring to enter the ICT industry. Its industry specific syllabus covers most industry and IT higher educational requirements and these courses are carried out by leading panel of lecturers. The course content will comprise of communication skills in English, basics in mathematics, mathematics for computing and business, personal computer based applications, elements of electronics, design and development of websites and graphic designing. With 24 years of experience as being a pioneer in providing British higher education in Business and Information Technology in Sri Lanka, IIT has produced nearly 3000 graduates who are holding prestigious positions across the globe. Since its inception, with a dedicated team of lecturers and administrators, IIT remains the number one choice amongst students for IT and Business degrees.
