The Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM), the premier human resources institution in the country, will be assuming new initiatives in the industry in the upcoming year. Speaking of what the new year holds for the institution, its Membership Development Committee Chairman and Vice President Rohitha Amarapala elaborates on the progress made thus far in terms of IPM’s new direction in expanding the field of human resource management (HRM) in Sri Lanka. On a professional and organisational level the institution has secured a 30% growth during the year 2013 and also gained much recognition in the country, as an HRM organisation as well as an educational institution. ISO 9001-2008 Quality Award, 5S Award, Best SME Brand of the Year Award, Gold Award for SME Annual Report of the Year, are some of the splendid plaudits conferred on IPM in 2013 that substantiates the supreme position IPM holds in the subject and line of HRM as well as in the educational field. Whilst the trend being growth in all aspects of HRM and Human Resource Development, IPM has in store an intriguing and engaging plan for the year 2014. According to Amarapala, one of the first initiatives for the new year will be a collaboration with some of Sri Lanka’s prominent multinational and blue-chip companies to facilitate internship programs for PQHRM (Professional Qualification in Human Resource Management) qualified students of IPM. He explained that this effort will essentially ensure practical hands-on experience and hence better prospects for PQHRM graduates, nurturing even higher standards for the prestigious professional qualification provided exclusively by IPM. Further, this year will also see several additional collaborations with other professional institutions of the country, in the manner the IPM and the Chartered Accountants [CA] of Sri Lanka signed up a MOU recently for mutual professional enhancement and association together with exchange of skills and knowledge between the two organisations. IPM also anticipates cordial and closer relationships with the International Labour Organization in terms of HRM and related policies. Mutual collaboration with Sri Lanka Association for Software and Service Companies (SLASSCOM), expected to commence this year, will also be an added advantage for the members and students of IPM. The new initiatives of the institution will essentially include new study programs related to HRM. Over the years IPM has contributed tremendously to the education and professionalism of HRM through their focused yet diverse study programs that address the needs of this key sector. Keeping with this trend the institution will be introducing new study programs focusing on economic development through human resource capital. Further explaining the need for this new initiative in 2014, Rohitha Amarapala states that the key commitment of the IPM is to, “add value to the profession by providing it with a multi-skill feature; enabling HRM professionals to face the challenges of the globalised environment”. He also explains that the challenges of the brand new year essentially revolve around upholding the good image of the institution, which in effect calls for this style of multi-faceted approach which takes into consideration all aspects of the industry. As a concluding point, Amarapala draws attention to the importance of the close collaboration of different industries and professions in Sri Lanka in an effort towards building the country’s human capital and requests, “HR practitioners to join hands with IPM in contributing towards the development of human capital of the country.”
