Institute of Supply and Materials Management (ISMM) which is the national institute for supply chain management conducted its 21st convocation on 19 January 2013, at the committee room of Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) under the patronage of Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama and Merchant Bank Director and Management Consultant, Industrial Development Board and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Dr. Ranjith Cabral.
The highest qualification that could be obtained in Sri Lanka in the field of supply chain management or Diploma in Purchasing and Materials Management (DPMM) was awarded to 39 students.
Also after successful completion of the research paper by already passed out eight DPMM diploma students was awarded with Graduate Diploma in Supply Chain Management (GDPSCM).
Kumara Welgama addressing the gathering explained the importance of supply chain management since it is involved in any type of business.
He wishes the graduates who are passing out and requested them to focus on important areas of the business.
Dr. Ranjith Cabral in his address showed the importance of professionalism and requested from the graduates to follow the right procedures and not to fear to say no to wrong things and yes to right things.
He in fact showed the importance of supply chain management and said unlike in the old days the focus on SCM is key to compete in the market.
ISMM President Danesha Perera, addressing the gathering brought to the notice of the students and the gathering the importance of the portfolio held by Kumara Welgama.
He elaborated that many economic activities in the transport sector are important components of the economy impacting on development and the welfare of populations.
When transport systems are efficient, they provide economic and social opportunities and benefits that result in positive multipliers effects such as better accessibility to markets, employment and additional investments.
When transport systems are deficient in terms of capacity or reliability, they can have an economic cost such as reduced or missed opportunities.
He also explained the advantages of being a good leader. Danesha requested from all the students who are passing out today to develop good leadership qualities.
Finally Perera eagerly requested the students who pass out, after going through a very complex and versatile study program for a period of three years, to manage of supply chain management in their organisations professionally by using the cross functional knowledge gathered to meet the challenges in the developing and competitive environment.
