The Institute of Supply & Materials Management (ISMM) which leads the supply chain professionals in the country organised another evening seminar (CPD/CPE session) for its members and public recently at OPA Auditorium.

Guest Speaker Dr. Lalith Senaweera, Director General of the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), delivered the presentation and explained the importance of ISO standards. ISO standards are international and adopted by many governments.

By integrating ISO standards into national regulation, governments help to ensure that requirements for imports and exports are the same the world over, therefore facilitating the movement of goods, services and technologies from country to country.Sri Lanka Standards Institution Director General Dr. Lalith Senaweera (right) addresses the event. The existence of different national or regional standards can create technical barriers to trade and increase the cost of doing business. The Technical Barriers Trade (TBT) Agreement recognises the important contribution that international standards and conformity assessment systems can make to improving efficiency of production and facilitating international trade.

Where international standards exist or their completion is imminent, therefore, the Code of Good Practice says that standardising bodies should use them, or the relevant parts of them, as a basis for standards they develop.

ISO standards are to harmonise technical specifications of products and services making industry more efficient and breaking down barriers to international trade. Conformity to international standards helps reassure consumers that products are safe, efficient and good for the environment. International standards help optimise operations and therefore improve the bottom line.

International standards help improve quality, enhance customer satisfaction and increase sales and therefore many national standards bodies in the world adopt international standards as national standards. For instance, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000 are international standards on management systems and each and every country in the world adopted these standards as their national standards and therefore conformity to these standards facilitate world trade.

ISMM President Danesha Perera addressing the gathering indicated the importance of the knowledge and the education on the ISO standards to ensure that operations are synchronised throughout the process as per the standards set to meet the customer expectations. It is vital and utmost importance to give the confidence to the customers that quality of services and goods are delivered without deviation from the process.

Finally he thanked Dr. Senaweera for devoting time to make the presentation for SCM professionals. He also thanked the Seminars and Functions Committee and the staff of ISMM for organising the event.
