Twenty-three year old Kasun Gunawardhana of Ibbagamuwa has emerged as the prize winner of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka’s (CA Sri Lanka) Strategic Level I exam for Strategic Management Accounting held in June this year.
Gunawardhana, who was ranked the island’s first in the commerce stream in the 2008 GCE Advanced Level exam, is also an undergraduate of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura following the B.Sc Management (Accountancy special) degree program.
A former student of Ibbagamuwa Central College, Gunawardhana was recognised as the best student of the school in 2008 and was also the head prefect in 2008/2009 while also excelling in numerous extra-curricular activities apart from his academic achievements while in school.
“I decided to join the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, because it has for many years excelled in providing the best accountancy education in the country, which is also globally recognised. In today’s competition, I believe it is important to have both professional and academic education which is recognised not only in our country but also abroad, this is why I joined CA Sri Lanka,” he said.
He praised the curriculum offered at the institute as it did not only restrict to accountancy but also cover other important areas including business, management and IT while also helping students improve on their English language skills which are a requirement in today’s business world.
CA Sri Lanka President Sujeewa Rajapakse, while congratulating the student on his achievement, emphasised that the institute had always been a hot spot for an impressive number of high achievers both from the commerce and non-commerce streams.
“We need more students like Kasun, because they set such high standards which are a requirement nowadays to survive in the present competitive business world. I congratulate him and wish him all the best for his future endeavours,” Rajapakse said.
Chief Executive officer of CA Sri Lanka Aruna Alwis noted that the institute would continue to provide its students, who are among its primary stakeholders, the best of facilities as well as qualifications, both local and foreign.
“We have dedicated centres in our institute for the betterment of our students’ knowledge in IT and English. Also, within the next few months, work on our new building will complete and students will benefit from some of the best infrastructure study facilities available anywhere in Colombo,” Alwis added.
