Kelaniya University Economics Department honours veterans, recognises young talent

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya Prof. Sarath Amunugama recently unveiled the photographs of the founding fathers of the Department of Economics of the University of Kelaniya, viz. Prof. Jayantha Kelegama (Head of the Department of Economics from 1960-1966), Prof. F.R. Jayasuriya (Head of Department from 1967-1974), Prof. Tilak Ratnakara, Prof. K.Dharmasena, Prof. Kamal Karunanayake and K.P.V. Karunaratne.
The event took place after the Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony of the Department of Economics where a number of students who excelled in their academic work were granted scholarships. There were awards sponsored by leading companies such as DFCC Vardhana Bank, CIC Holdings PLC, Hayleys PLC, Asia Siyaka and Aitken Spence.
It also featured awards in memory of leading personalities such as Jayantha Kelegama (Award for Economic Planning), Lakshman Kadirgamar (Award for International Studies) and so on. The keynote address at the event was delivered by Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka.
The event was graced by the Head of the Department of Economics Dr. D.M. Ajith Dissanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. A.H.M.H. Abeyrathna, former Head of the Department of Economics Prof. Ajitha Tennakoon and several other members of the academia. The Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony will be an annual event of the Department of Economics of the University of Kelaniya.
