Lean transformation: A journey and not one single activity
Lean requires integration of three elements; operating system, management infrastructure together with lean mind sets and behaviours. Properly understood in terms of its purpose of lean transformation rather than merely as a system of execution, an operating system is the way in which assts, resources and people are managed in order to create value and flow to the customer. It means there should be a clear business need to transform your process. The right management infrastructure will reinforce the lean operating system and ensure that performance objectives can be achieved and sustained.
Presently a wrong perception exists that lean practice is only suitable to the manufacturing industry – this not true. Provided the five main aspects of management infrastructure i.e. organisation structure, performance management system, continuous improvement infrastructure, processes for developing operational skills, and management of key functional support processors are addressed in the correct way, lean office practice can be successfully implemented in any industry, thus not limiting to manufacturing.
A number of leading organisations, Brandix Apparel Solutions, Ansell Textiles Lanka, Sri Lanka Telecom, Textured Jersey Plc, Citizen Development and Business Finance Plc and Ansell Lanka Ltd. sent their staff members to the Lean office one day seminar organised by the Institute of Lean Management – Sri Lanka, at Hotel Galadari VIP lounge.
