Mercury Institute of Management, being one of the forerunners in higher education, recently organised a series of workshops for its students. The main objective of these workshops was to give Mercury students that extra boost towards becoming multi-qualified, multi-skilled professionals who will be geared to thrive and flourish in today’s highly competitive corporate environment. Mercury Head of Job Bank Dinusha Weerawardane stated, “There are so many students who are talented, but who are finding it hard to find jobs. We have identified the main reason for this, which is the fact that students often struggle to formulate a CV and even if they do get called in for an interview, they are unable to shine due to the fact that they are unprepared for such situations. This is why we organised a series of workshops, especially focused on CV writing and grooming for interviews.” The workshop was organised by Mercury, in collaboration with ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and was conducted by Think Tank Training and Development Solutions Ltd Training, Learning & Development Consultant Dinali Dandeniya. There were two workshops that took place, one on 12 September 2014 and the other on 26 September 2014. At these workshops, students received exclusive training and guidance on how to create the perfect CV to impress employers. The latter part of the session was aimed at grooming them for interviews, and included advice about the do’s and don’ts at interviews. Speaking to one of the students who took part at this workshop, Raveena Gunasekara was of the opinion that this workshop helped her boost her career. She said, “At first I thought it might be boring, but a few minutes into the program I realised there is a lot to be gained from it. Dinali taught us to think from the perspective of the employer and structure the CV accordingly.” In line with its aspirations to mould its students into work-ready professionals, Mercury hopes to organise many such events in the future, including career days and walk-in interview sessions with employers.
