A convocation is the main event of any seat of higher learning that projects both the fruition of the endeavours of its faculty, as well as the culmination of the achievements of its graduates who have acquired knowledge and competencies and achieved the desired intellectual standards. However, taken as a whole, the PIM convocation goes beyond the traditional activity of conferring postgraduate degrees. It was an event that showcased the facility with which the PIM conducts its postgraduate professional endeavours.
The Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, conducted its largest convocation thus far, on Saturday, 15 June, 2013 at the Blue Water Hotel, Wadduwa, to confer degrees on 419 professionals in the following courses: Master of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management, Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration in International Trade and Logistics and Master of Customs Administration.
These professionals received postgraduate degrees, witnessed by a distinguished gathering, which included their families, friends and well-wishers. Ten merit awards were also presented to those who excelled in their programme of study. A special feature was the successful completion of the degree of Master of Business Administration by 60 professions of the PIM International Centre in Dubai.
The 419 research and skills projects conducted by these graduates included nine industries; process innovation and quality management; product development and marketing; policy formulation for state institutions; motivation and employee commitment; performance management; knowledge organisations and their challenges; local culture and international frameworks, and case studies on outstanding companies and brands.
Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Rev. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thero who declared open the convocation conferred degrees on the graduates. Dean, Faculty of Medical Science and Acting Vice Chancellor of the Sri Jayewardenepura University Prof. Mohan de Silva, PIM Director Prof. Uditha Liyanage and the faculty of the PIM attended the ceremony.
Dialogue Axiata PLC. Group Chief Executive, Dr. Hans Wijesuriya delivered the convocation address. Concluding his address he remarked: “As future leaders and managers of Sri Lanka Inc., your challenge of today and tomorrow is to add a new legacy to the proud history of the PIM. This legacy will be founded on your humanistic understanding of the exponential opportunities, technological advancements, and modernisation placed before us and your courage and innovation in leading our country upstream with the requisite wisdom, in a manner which creates a better place for future generations of Sri Lankans.”
The convocation valedictory was delivered by Vidakshani Nilushika Gunasekara.
