John Keells Holdings PLC., in its endeavour to serve its clients better and strengthen its practices of good governance, continued to engage the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) to develop its middle level managers. The second batch of Keells middle management underwent a management development program (MDP) from January to April 2013. The PIM’s executive/management development programs are designed, keeping in view the ever changing demands on business/professional executives. The program-content is constantly reviewed and changes made on a continuous basis. The objective of the PIM’s MDPs is to help improve organisational management systems and practices by providing relevant training and development to the executives of different sectors operating at different levels in the organisational hierarchy. The participants are equipped with the latest tools, techniques and skills spanning different streams of management. The initial step of this MDP was the preparation of a competency model as it provides the ‘keystone’ for many major subsystems of HRM. The program was, in fact, customised based on specific needs, and therefore, tailor made to meet the requirements of the companies within JKH. The program contained ten modules and the final evaluation was based on a comprehensive examination. The Institute adopted a fine mix of ‘telling, showing, asking and doing’ in the delivery of the program. This approach provides the much desired variety to keep the participants’ attention, interest and enthusiasm kindled throughout the session. Combined with this approach was the requirement to submit learning diaries by the participants, at the end of each module. This new element made the participants express the knowledge gathered in their own words, thereby enriching their vocabulary and language skills, in addition to the ability to capture the more important aspects of the modules. The award ceremony was conducted recently at the PIM. PIM Director Prof. Uditha Liyanage, faculty and John Keells Holdings PLC. HR, Legal and Secretarial President Dilani Alagaratnam, graced the occasion.
