Medical administrators have wide-ranging influence within the field of health care. The leadership that these professionals provide sets the future course not only for the facilities they manage but also for the healthcare system as a whole.
Taking the criticality of the position they occupy and the functions they perform in the country’s health care system, the Ministry of Health has resorted to a continuous course of action to train and develop the country’s medical administrators.
Therefore, the second program to enhance managerial skills for another batch of medical administrators was launched recently. This was a six-day program which contains the more important facets of management including personal excellence, leadership excellence, decision-making and problem solving, team-dynamics, planning, service quality, public/customer relations and managing people.
Dr. Ajantha S. Darmasiri, Acting Director, PIM, appreciated the initiative taken by the Ministry of Health to enhance the quality of the country’s health services by upgrading the skills of those that matter, namely, medical administrators. He stated that during the PIM’s short history it has acquired phenomenal success both in quality of teaching and maintaining professional standards.
Dr. Ananda Gunasekara, Deputy Director General, Health Services, expressed his satisfaction over the manner in which the PIM has been conducting special programs of this nature. He wished that the participants would accrue maximum benefits by getting positively involved in the program, and said that the intention of the Ministry of Health is to place all medical administrators on a level playing field, so that they would be able to take and implement decisions for the benefit of the community at large.
