The Ministry of Health has, with the experiences it had with the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) in conducting several training and management development programmes in the past, embarked on a comprehensive management skills development program running for a continuous period of six days.
The six-day program referred to as the Program to Enhance Managerial Skills of Medical Officers of the Ministry of Health is, therefore, the final outcome of a series of discussions the Ministry of Health had with the PIM in identifying the program content in order to fill the existing managerial gaps that need to be covered to transform the target group, namely, the medical practitioners to general managers of their respective units of work.
The inaugural session was addressed by Dr. Ajantha S. Dharmasiri, Acting Director, PIM, Dr. Ananda Gunasekara and Dr. Sunil Alwis of the Ministry of Health. The program was scheduled for a period from 9 to 14 February for a group of 45 medical officers. Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Director General of Health Services, was the chief guest at the certificate awarding ceremony on the final day.
The Ministry of Health is of the view that although the Sri Lankan Health Services have achieved a high standard in their legitimate health activities, as their main delivery components, the quality aspects are yet to be developed to the desired standards. The Ministry of Health, is therefore, of the view that it is mandatory to take a special interest in improving the managerial skills of the health administrators in the system in order to achieve the expected objectives.
