Private higher educational institutions operating in Sri Lanka and awarding degrees and post-graduate degrees affiliated to overseas universities continue to operate with registrations obtained under Board of Investment.
This was confirmed the Ministry of Higher Education yesterday at Parliament in response to a question for oral answer raised by Akila Viraj Kariyawasam (MP – UNP).
Ministry of Higher Education took refuge highlighting the lacuna in legal provisioning set in the Universities Act No.16 of 1978, which should have enabled it to monitor and standardize such private higher educational institutions as well as to keep an updated list with addresses and names of the investors.
“At present Standing Committee on Accreditation and Quality Assurance (SCAQA) has been established and in future it is expected to proceed to register these institutions and for supervisions of standards,” confirmed the Ministry.
