Professor Sudatta Ranasinghe inaugural Memorial Oration

The inaugural Prof. Sudatta Ranasinghe Memorial Oration will be held on Monday, 25November at 5:45 p.m. at the auditorium of the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM), Colombo 8.
The Oration will be delivered by former Central Bank of Sri Lanka Deputy Governor Dr. W.A. Wijewardena, a close associate and a batch-mate of Prof. Ranasinghe at the University of Sri Jayewardenpura.
The oration is organised by the PIM Alumni Association, where Prof. Ranasinghe was an active member of the Executive Committee in the late nineties.
Oration will be on ‘Cultural Nationalism; Boon or Bane to Society?’
Prof. Sudatta Ranasinghe,BPA (Hon), PG Dip in App. Soc. Stats (Sri Lanka), MPA (Sri J), PhD (PIM/Sri J) was the Senior Professor of Management, Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) at the time of his demise. He performed a yeomen service to OUSL in various academic and administrative capacities including including Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Prior to joining OUSL he served a long period of time at the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) as a consultant, program coordinator and Senior Lecturer. He was also an Hon. Member, Institute of Personnel Management, Sri Lanka and a Member, Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science which he served with distinction.
Professor Ranasinghe was a reputed academic of the first order with a large number papers to his credit published in top ranking journals. He had also authored a number well received books on a variety of subjects. A fearless speaker in the spheres of Human resource management, public policy and governance he always stood for what is right and above all, was a gentleman par excellence .
According to his erstwhile colleague, Associate Prof. Jay Weerawardena, University of Queensland, Australia: “Prof. Ranasinghe belonged to a group of Sri Lankan academics who were passionate about understanding the indigenous management practices adopted by our business leaders instead of preaching management concepts that were born in Western contexts. He also strongly believed in developing research competence and advancing knowledge as a foundation for an academic career ”.
A brief sketch of W.A. Wijewardena who will deliver the Memorial Oration follows:
W.A. Wijewardena, obtained a First Class Honors Degree in Public Administration and a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and an MSc Degree in Economics from the University of York,
He functioned as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from 2000 to 2009, overlooking the monetary policy and price stability functions of the bank. He was a career central banker who served with distinction for more than 37 years holding important positions during a long tenure in the bank.
Presently, he functions as an independent consultant on economics, finance, conflict resolution and institution building. He was also chairman, Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and Chairman, Sri Lanka Auditing and Standards Monitoring Board. He has also been a visiting lecturer and a writer in economics and banking as well as a contributor to Sri Lankan newspapers on a regular basis.
Having been in the same batch batch at the University of Sri Jayewardenpura they shared common interests and continued to maintain a close association with each other.
The relaunching of the Prof. Sudatta Ranasinhge website will also take place on that day.
