In an effort to strengthen its activities, SABAH Sri Lanka (SAARC Business Association of Home Based workers) and the IDB (Industrial Development Board) recently announced the calling of applications for a workshop on developing management skills, technology and sales promotion for women entrepreneurs who are engaged in the domestic food industry in the Colombo District.
SABAH is a network of Sri Lankan women food producers funded by the SAARC Development Fund (SDF). SABAH Sri Lanka is the local arm of the SABAH association now active in seven SAARC countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Afghanistan.
According to the Department of Census and Statistics, in 2011, establishments with five or more persons engaged in manufacturing of food products and beverages industries got 118,235 employees and added value to the economy to the tune of Rs. 178, 044,118,426 in Sri Lanka.
SABAH has been developing the knowledge and skills of selected women towards maintaining a higher quality standard targeting expanded up-end markets through specially designed local and international trainings. Hence these products produced by these experienced and well trained women are tinged with the traditional taste using modern methods of hygiene and quality.
SABAH and IDB focus on ways to improve food production and sustainability. These skills training programs teach women entrepreneurs how to find opportunity, identification and guidance, managing and controlling the domestic food industry, marketing strategies, creative selling and promotion skills, leadership, team building skills and support from other entrepreneurs in SAARC countries to help them generate more product and more profit.
