SLIIT, the premier degree awarding Institute in Sri Lanka with over 6,000 students studying in the fields of computing, business and engineering, signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) at the SLIIT campus recently. Andrew Harding, Managing Director - CIMA, UK and Professor Lalith Gamage, President/CEO of SLIIT exchanged the agreement on behalf of the two institutes. CIMA Regional Director for Middle East, South Asia and North Africa Bradley Emerson, Radley Stephen, Country Head CIMA Sri Lanka and Peumika Karunaratne, Regional Student Support & Development Manager also participated in the ceremony.   This is a collaborative arrangement between CIMA and SLIIT to provide a faster track for SLIIT students to acquire both a business degree and the CIMA professional qualification that prepares them for a challenging career as professionally qualified management accountants, equipped with a business degree. This joint venture provides an opportunity to study simultaneously which would prove to be both cost effective and time saving. It will further enhance the quality of Business Management and Accounting Education by incorporating professional and academic requirements. Third year undergraduates of the SHU BBA program and those who have completed the said program will be exempted from five Certificate level modules and the Enterprise operations (E1) module from the operational level. A pathway is also available for CIMA students to enter SLIIT Business Management degrees taking in to consideration the academic content and the equivalent credit values that the CIMA students have acquired on the completion of the CIMA qualification. To benefit from this agreement, the student needs to be registered with both CIMA and SLIIT, as applicable. Commenting on this memorable occasion, Professor Lalith Gamage, President and CEO of SLIIT, stated: “Our relationship with CIMA goes back to 2005. We started a MSc. in Information Management program back in 2004 and in 2005 we entered into an agreement with CIMA. Today we are signing this MoA which will further strengthen our collaboration. It is a great opportunity for students to obtain both academic and professional qualifications so that they can meet the challenges in the industry.” Elaborating further he said: “The main beneficiaries of this initiative are the students who would be able to get a dual qualification.” CIMA offers more than just a mere qualification, but a pathway to bigger and better career prospects. “This is one of the fastest agreements CIMA has ever done across the world. We want to make sure that our future generation has that international skill set that will make us competitive in the world market. This agreement is in line to strengthen our future generation,” noted Bradley Emerson, CIMA Regional Director for Middle East, South Asia and North Africa. Speaking on the partnership, Andrew Harding, Managing Director – CIMA, UK said: “This agreement between SLIIT and CIMA is the first of a kind for CIMA in Sri Lanka. We have programs in Australia, Malaysia, Pakistan, UAE, Poland and in UK where we bring together academic programs with professional programs. This is meeting a need which businesses around the world are calling for. I sincerely hope that programs like this will ensure future opportunities for the youth of this country. I am so happy today that we are able to sign this agreement with SLIIT, which will give an opportunity for graduates from a local Institution to obtain academic and professional qualification simultaneously.” Potential students can enjoy the special rate, guidance of highly acclaimed lecturers and a friendly learning environment while studying for CIMA at the SLIIT.
