Teacher launches maths website to help students free of charge

Jayasundara Arachchige Gunasiri, the Head of Mathematics of the Upper School of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, yesterday launched www.mathssir.lk, a website designed to help students learn mathematics easily through video presentations and work sheets. S. Thomas’ College Warden Prof. Indra de Soysa looks on     The website aims to help students who have missed lessons or are struggling to complete their syllabi with a special focus on grade 9 to 11 students. The online lessons and worksheets are also available in all three languages with a limited focus on international syllabi as well. The website was launched yesterday at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo with the support of the Tharunyata Hetak organisation. Rohitha Rajapaksa, who is featured on the website’s Maths Tricks section, was also present at the launch event. Jayasundara has included past papers on the website while he also invited other local schools to submit their past papers in order to create a comprehensive database for the students to tap into. “Many students dislike mathematics because it is challenging, but this website delivers lessons that are both enjoyable and effective. All lessons are completely free, making the website accessible to all students from both rural and urban Sri Lanka,” he stated. The website contains all modules from grade 9 to 11 to help students preparing for the GCE O/L examinations. The website will also include free monthly assignments and term assignments. Jayasundara began his teaching career as a faculty member of the University of Colombo and has over 25 years of experience in teaching as well as 10 years experience in marking O/L examination papers. He currently teaches students who are preparing for their Edexcel Cambridge and London examinations.
