“I came here today having lost my focus because of a personal problem. Leaving though with a positive mind to deal with the issues in a calm mind,” was how one participant at Deepal’s ‘Triple Balance’ summarised her experiences at the end of the program. Deepal, the versatile management development consultant delivered this unique program to a packed audience on 20 March at the Galadari Hotel. In the audience were managing directors of companies, business owners and senior managers of companies. They all had one thing common to say. “It was so refreshing, thought provoking and certainly there is very high relevance”. “I developed this program based on my own observations throughout my career and as a result of various interactions with numerous organisations. The corporate effectiveness is directly linked to individual effectiveness. In achieving this it is important finding equilibrium with all stake holders. It is not just seeking balance between work and life. It is much more than that. This cannot be achieved unless there is understanding communication and harmony. Gaining that is a skill more than taking a holiday or going to the gym,” says . The first module of the program was on business and Deepal took the participants through the basic strategic options a business can have and how using some simple techniques one can look at the business in a novel way leading in to innovating various aspects of the business. This was done with case studies and hands on exercises.  The heart of the program was devoted to understanding how mindfulness becomes an important executive capability in the world of today. Going beyond pure theoretical explanations the participants tried different exercises that can be used to learn and master the skill. One such experiment was how to eat something mindfully.  The participants spent time observing all the sensory experiences that are there when eating a grape! The session was based on the book ‘Inward Bound’ by Deepal. (The Sinhala version is Satiyen Dawasak). “Almost all the participants wanted to join a one day retreat on how to develop mindfulness and this will be held pretty soon,” said Deepal. The discussion on family as expected was very engaging since it is truly close to heart. Deepal identified three Cs that is critical to a successful family. Communication, Care and Commitment are the three cornerstones that govern success at family level according to Deepal. “In this highly stressed times we do not have time to pay attention to the affairs of the family at the right time. We tend to approach them in the way we deal with aches and pains by taking a painkiller to subside the symptom. But with family this will not work. Most professionals realise the gravity in the family when issues reach crisis stage,” observed Deepal. Towards this he presented a simple frame work if used that can generate meaningful communications. While sharing many a simple tips and practices that can improve the wellness of family the participants undertook an exercise to identify what their true priorities at the moment are. Triple Balance program will be repeated as a public program as well as will be conducted as tailor-made for company programs as well. Deepal can be reached via [email protected].
