The University of Derby has appointed BMS, a UK education specialist in Sri Lanka, as its partner for the delivery of three programs: an accounting and finance degree, a hospitality degree and a MBA with a professional top-up.
At a launch event held at the British High Commission, Colombo, the Acting British High Commissioner Robbie Bulloch, welcomed the formal partnership between the University of Derby and BMS.
“This will add value to Sri Lankan education in the fields of business, finance and hospitality,” he stated. He further commented, “With UK qualifications dominating the education sector in Sri Lanka, the University of Derby will be able to tap into the thirst for British knowledge. Professional top-up options also allow more students to accomplish both professional and academic qualifications in cost-effective ways, while creating a more skilled and balanced workforce.”

BMS President, W. A. Wijewardena (former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka) said, “BMS is the first institution to provide pathways to convert local professional qualifications into British degrees and make UK education accessible and affordable to Sri Lankans. We are delighted to link up with University of Derby to offer its programs in Sri Lanka, to further enhance our recognised local qualifications.”
The University of Derby MBA is one of the few in the UK hat has been designed in consultation with and accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), a leading body of professional management.
Through this program, holders of Higher National Diplomas or qualifications from CIMA, ACCA, CASL or a foundation degree in accounting and finance can obtain a BA (Hons) in accounting and finance in just one year, adopting supported flexible learning methodology.
Also present at the event were Philip Plowden, Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Derby, Julie Stone, Head of Online Learning, Esther Jubb, Academic Manager, University of Derby Online Learning, Nick Slade, Director of International Development of the University, and many local dignitaries from the academia and the industry.
