Students of Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Finance taking steps to career success through preparation for CFA Program
The University of Kelaniya has become the latest university to be welcomed into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program.
The Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Finance has been acknowledged as incorporating at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program.
This program positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, which has become the most respected and recognised investment credential in the world.
Entry into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program signals to potential students, employers, and the marketplace that the University of Kelaniya curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well-suited to preparing students to sit for the CFA examinations. Through participation in this program, the University of Kelaniya is eligible to receive a limited number of student scholarships for the CFA Program each year.
“Students in these programs study the Candidate Body of Knowledge, which includes the core knowledge, skills, and abilities identified by practitioners worldwide as essential for successful practice,” said Charles Appeadu, PhD, CFA, Head of University Relations at CFA Institute.
“By mastering the fundamentals of the CFA Program as well as the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, these future investment professionals gain a strong foundation that helps prepare them well to join the growing CFA Institute community dedicated to promoting the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence for the ultimate benefit of society.”
Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Finance Program was started in year 2004under the Department of Accountancy. In 2008, Finance Studies Unit (FSU) was established with the view of improving quality of the finance degree program and was subsequently upgraded as a separate department in June 2011. The Degree program is offered in English medium and it covers areas like financial strategy, corporate finance, treasury management, business valuation, business strategy, project appraisal and management, and working capital management, etc.
In addition, the internship program of one-and-a-half years adds value to the degree program, by enabling students to apply theories learnt in class into practice. Current intake of the degree program is 60 students. Selection for the degree is highly competitive and takes place at the entry point, based on their Z-score and preference. Each year the best performing students are awarded with gold medals and the newest addition is the gold medal for ‘Most Outstanding Student of the Department of Finance’ offered by the CFA Society Sri Lanka.
At present, Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Degree in Finance is the only Sri Lankan degree program accepted into University Recognition Program of the CFA Institute and the second undergraduate degree in South Asia.
