Chamini Sajeeva Dasanayake won the Overall Winner’s Award at the recently concluded Jewellery Design Competition, 2013. Dasanayake’s inspired design was impeccably crafted by Lalitha Jewellers.
The Jewellery Design Competition, initiated in 2010, by the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) is held annually to culminate at the Facets Sri Lanka Exhibition. The Exhibition, which commenced in 1991 and also held annually, is considered to be one of the foremost gem and jewellery exhibitions in the island. The objective of the competition is to recognise the abilities of Sri Lankan jewellery designers. Similar to the previous years, there were many prominent designers affiliated with renowned jewellery companies participating in the competition. A total of 148 applications were received this year, from 51 designers. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘The Story of the Wind’, where designers were encouraged to design pieces of jewellery reflecting either the good or the bad attributes of the ‘wind’. The competition was held in three categories, namely plain gold jewellery, diamond studded jewellery and coloured stone-studded jewellery. And out of 9 finalists from the three categories, Chamini Sajeeva Dasanayake became the overall winner.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the winning design, Dasanayake said, “I created this design drawing inspiration from the tornado. I was intrigued by the quality that a tornado possessed to uproot and carry all things in its path. And I tried to bring that quality into the design.” The necklace, fashioned out of white gold and gem stones such as blue sapphires, rubies, amethysts, citrine and diamonds, follows a circular pattern perfectly conveying the motion of a tornado. “My designs are mainly based on geometrical shapes, especially circles, and it has become part of my identity, which could be clearly seen with the winning design,” she further added.
Titled ‘Whirlwind’, the brilliant design was sponsored and manufactured by Lalitha Jewellers, after being selected as a category finalist. “A lot of the credit for winning this award goes to Lalitha Jewellers,” said Dasanayake, revealing her thoughts on working with Lalitha Jewellers. “The manufactured necklace is a precise replication of the design that I drew and they have done a very beautiful job of capturing the exact idea. I have to thank Mr. Sellakumar and his team at Lalithas for producing this piece.”
Through the combination of brilliant designing by Chamini Dasanayake and excellent craftsmanship by Lalitha Jewellers, Whirlwind was chosen as the overall winner by a panel of 5 independent judges, who are leaders in their own fields.
“It was a very good experience for us to work with Ms. Dasanayake,” said Lalitha Jewellers Managing Director Sellakumar Kandasamy. “We were very happy that we were able to give the right interpretation to her design in order for her to win The Jewellery Design Competition, 2013.”
Lalitha Jewellers, a house hold name in Sri Lanka with sixty years of experience, is one of the most sought after jewellery companies in the island.
