The International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) will hold the above workshop scheduled to take place on 4 April from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Renuka Hotel, Colombo 3.

The workshop will feature the dissemination of findings of a survey done on Budgetary Relief Allowance on Workers Act (BRAWA) and its impact on firm level operations and labour market efficiency not only from a purely financial aspect, but also from an overall management perspective. This would include how it has affected or not affected performance management systems, collective bargaining (if any) and wage differentials within the structures that existed within the organisation. In addition, it will also give an opportunity for the ILO to explain its convention on wage fixation and share experiences of other countries in national wage fixation.

The survey was conducted by Prof. Sunil Chandrasiri together with representatives from the Employer Federation of Ceylon (EFC) and covered 50 firms representing eight major economic sectors of the national economy with coverage of 49,153 employees.

The workshop will bring together representatives of government ministries and departments, employers’ organisations, private sector organisations and trade unions and academics and will provide the opportunity for the social partners to formulate a way forward mechanism and have a more responsible and a focused strategy in national wage fixation.
