By Shabiya Ali Ahlam Intel yesterday launched the 4th generation Intel Core processor in Sri Lanka with the promise of delivering ‘stunning PC performance with tablet-like mobility’. With the 4th generation core processor family reinventing personal computing as people know it today, Intel’s newest innovation delivers optimised experience personalised for end-users specific needs. Not only is it the first system on a chip for PC’s which enable new form factors and two-in-one designs, the 4th generation Intel Core processors allows 50% improvement in battery life, a biggest gain in the company’s history according to Intel. Acknowledging that “wonderful” begins with what is inside, Intel Director Strategic Initiatives-South Asia Rajiv Bhalla said the new Intel Core processor provides incredibly responsive, secure and powerful performance for consumers to create and experience content wherever their mobile lifestyle takes them. “This is the first chip ever built from the ground up for Ultrabook and is the most significant roadmap change since Intel Centrino. The 4th generation Intel Core processor accelerates a broad new category in two-in-one devices, delivering the best of a notebook and a tablet in amazing new form factors,” he said.   “This year is the perfect time for consumers to refresh their old tablet or PC with these two-in-one devices,” he added. While a laptop manufactured in the 2010 required a power level of 35 watts, devices manufactured with Intel’s latest technology will consume no more than six watts. According to Bhalla, with this, Intel is enabling thinner, lighter, cooler, quieter, and fan-less designs. He elaborated that in addition to the improvement in battery life, comparing to the previous generation, the new processor brings twice the improvement in standby battery life. By manufacturing the new ultra low-power processor, the CPU consumes a fraction of the power compared to the previous Generation as both, active and idle power levels are improved. “The 4th generation Intel Core processors also bring the highest performance currently available in mainstream computing with the additional benefit of superior graphics support,” he said. Speaking on the availability of the technology in the country, Intel Country Business Manager Indika De Zoysa said: “We have always been committed to providing Sri Lankan consumers with the best and latest technology that Intel has to offer. With major improvements to both battery life and CPU performance, the 4th generation Intel Core processors will now enable manufacturers’ offer a wide array of exciting form factors and help users get more done.” Highlighting the advantages of the new processor, Intel Technology India Channel Platform Manager Dinesh Devendra pointed out that all new Ultrabooks using this technology will be touch-enabled and will have inbuilt Intel Wireless Display capability to bring natural touch, motion interactivity, and speed mode for low-latency gaming on the big screen. “Not only will the Ultrabooks be hardware-ready for voice command and control, which gives users the flexibility to choose the most natural and intuitive way of handling the task at hand, the devices will wake in less than three seconds offering the nearly ‘instant-on’ experience that people want,” stated Devendra. He went on to say that the Ultrabooks will pull email, social media and other updates when in low-power mode which means less waiting for fresh data upon waking. Observing that desktop computers continue to play a critical role in business computing, Devendra said the new processor enables innovative, space-saving design in a secure package. He noted that among the variety of models are large-screened form factors with touch and type interactivity and Windows 8 Enterprise. With this, users can take full advantage of the full range of applications, peripherals, and drivers, including compatibility with Windows 7 environment. Devices made with the 4th generation Intel Core processors are equipped with enterprise-wide security straight from the chip. The new technology also offers built-in functionalities that strengthen security and protect both business data and personal information. The remote anti-theft capabilities and hardware accelerated encryption ensures that malware and root kit attacks do not compromise business systems.
