‘Blockchain Sri Lanka 2018’ to boost country’s journey towards Distributed Ledger Technology

‘Blockchain Sri Lanka 2018’ is to take place from 25-26 September at Cinnamon Grand with the aim of boosting the country’s journey towards Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) which is currently growing at a rapid pace.

“It has arrived and it is not social media, it is not big data, it is not robotics and it is not even Artificial Intelligence. You will be surprised to learn that it is the underlying technology of digital currencies, like Bitcoin. It is called, Blockchain,” stated Senior Banker in Oman Anslem Perera.

The event has been organised by the Business Process Outsourcing Services Sri Lanka (BPOS) with the momentum gathered from the Blockchain Oman 2018 that was held earlier this year. BPOS believes that that this forum will greatly aid the fast growing DLT by sharing best practices, insights and a series of knowledge sharing sessions. Perera also noted: “A blockchain, is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography. Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, a timestamp, and transaction data. By design, a blockchain is resistant to modification of the data.”

Day one of the forum will commence early evening with the inauguration ceremony, followed by the keynote address and a presentation on ‘A vision for Distributed Ledger Technologies in Sri Lanka’ which will be delivered by Blockchain Technologies Corp., USA Nick Spanos.

Spanos will touch about the importance of blockchain while sharing insights as to how the technology will have the greatest impact in the next few decades. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and networking cocktail.

Day two will consist of four plenary sessions including blockchain strategies and business cases, forecasting the future for Blockchain in financial services, Virtual currencies: New assets in the digital age and Blockchain – the right solution. BPOS has also invited an array of international speakers from New York, Ireland, Netherlands, Nigeria, Australia, India, Malaysia and Singapore and five Sri Lankan Speakers. There will be B2B meetings arranged on request and BPOS Global is committed to form partnerships with service providers to take Blockchain to every part of Sri Lanka.

“Blockchain is a disruptive technology that will fundamentally change banking as well as many other industries,” Perera added.

The forum will be held under the auspices of the Ministry of Telecommunication, Digital Infrastructure and Foreign Employment while Minister Harin Fernando will be the event’s Chief Guest. The keynote address will be delivered by Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka Chairman Prof. Rohan Samarajiva.
