The European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ECCSL) hosted an event on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) recently at Hilton Colombo Residencies in order to provide information to businesses and organisations in Sri Lanka which process, collect and store the personal data of citizens of the European Union about the impact of the GDPR.

The program was introduced and moderated by John Wilson, Attorney-at-Law, Notary Public and a Director of the European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka. The keynote speaker of the event was Dr. Ralf Sauer - Deputy Head of the Unit in charge of International Data Flows and Protection of the European Commission, via video conference; Jayantha Fernando – Program Director/Legal Advisor Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) and Roshan Chandraguptha – Principal Information Security Engineer, Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT).

Dr. Sauer spoke on the new EU data protection framework, its main principles, rights and obligations and the major changes that will be implemented after the GDPR.

Fernando in his presentation highlighted the legislative and policy considerations for data protection in Sri Lanka, while Chandraguptha spoke on the need for data protection in Sri Lanka, and the incidents of cybercrimes that can occur and the technical measures that can be taken to prevent such breaches.

This event was attended by more than 60 guests including ECCSL Members/Non-Members and it was sponsored by the EU Delegation of Sri Lanka and the Maldives and FriMi.
