SLASSCOM to open up opportunities in IT/BPM sector in East

The Regional Development Forum of SLASSCOM is teaming up with Eastern and South Eastern Universities to bring the IT/BPM Career Fair 2023 to the Eastern region of the country. 

This is set to take place from 30 May to 1 June and will be split across the two prestigious university campuses, with Day 1 and 2 hosted at Eastern University in Chenkalady and Day 2 and 3 taking place at Southeastern University in Oluvil. 

The IT/BPM Career Fair is an important initiative of SLASSCOM, set to promote and sustain the IT/BPM industry in Sri Lanka, which is a key contributor to the country’s economy. The Regional Development Forum of SLASSCOM recognising the potential of the industry, has been taking active measures to promote it in all parts of Sri Lanka. 

These efforts include creating awareness about the IT/BPM industry, building partnerships and collaborations with educational institutions, and delivering IT/BPM programs in the provinces to upskill the graduates who are pursuing IT/BPM related courses. The IT/BPM Career Fair is an integral part of these efforts.

SLASSCOM General Council Member Jehan Perera outlining the details of the two events said: “In order to cater to the unique needs of this region, we have designed the career fair to include a range of activities such as awareness sessions, tech talks, workshops, job interviews and offering internships and career opportunities to talent in the region. 

“These events will offer valuable opportunities for participants to gain insights into the latest developments and emerging trends in the IT/BPM sector, as well as practical skills and knowledge to help them thrive in this rapidly changing industry. Therefore, whether it is for a student, recent graduate, or seasoned professional, these events will provide a platform to learn, network and advance their careers in the exciting and dynamic world of IT/BPM.”

He added that companies will also have the opportunity to mark their presence in the region to help create awareness amongst undergraduates on diversified career options and opportunities available in the IT/BPM industry. 

“Sessions will be conducted on non-tech areas, covering the trends in the industry and how to be industry ready. The event will feature walk-in-interviews and resume collection for students who are ready for internships or recruitment, thereby supporting the companies in the region the opportunity in hiring competitive talent. 

“Our aim is to make this event a unique opportunity for students, industry professionals and other stakeholders to come together and discuss the current state and future prospects of the IT/BPM industry,” he stated.

Giving an insight into the overall objectives of the Regional Forym SLASSCOM Director Haridhu Abeygoonaratne explained: “The Regional Development Forum of SLASSCOM is dedicated to promoting and sustaining the growth of the IT/BPM industry in the regions. In pursuit of this goal, we actively seek out partnerships and collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders, including Government ministries and agencies, universities, regional IT hubs, communities, and certification bodies. 

“By working closely with these organisations, we hope to create awareness of the opportunities and benefits of the IT/BPM industry at the provincial level and deliver targeted programs that meet the specific needs of each region. Through these initiatives, our goal is to help build a thriving and sustainable IT/BPM ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders, from businesses and entrepreneurs to job seekers and students.”

SLASSCOM through this initiative aims to enhance skills of the local workforce by providing training and development opportunities, creating more jobs in the region, and bridging the gap between the demand and supply of skilled talent in the IT/BPM sector. This move is expected to have a significant impact on the economic growth of the region, as well as the IT/BPM industry in Sri Lanka as a whole.
