In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, announced that it would slash down its international roaming rates to over 100 countries along with attractive data packages for its customers in Sri Lanka.
Leveraging on its global efficiencies of scale, Airtel Lanka now offers Sri Lanka’s outbound travel population very attractive roaming rates which are the lowest provided by any local telecommunication operator in Sri Lanka.
Under the new offer, all Airtel prepaid and postpaid outbound customers can now enjoy the lowest roaming rates for just Rs. 20 per minute on voice calls. For data services, 15 MB of data will cost just US$ 5 per day, which are also the lowest rates offered by any operator in the country. Incoming calls while on roaming in India and Bangladesh will continue to cost a mere Rs. 2 per minute. The new rates will apply to all Middle Eastern countries as well as the Maldives, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, France, UK, Italy, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Thailand among others. This is expected to bring about significant benefits to Sri Lankan customers as several of these countries are the most travelled destinations.
Speaking about the new and attractive roaming rates, Suren Goonewardene, CEO – Sri Lanka, Bharti Airtel said, “With Bharti Airtel’s agility to optimise global synergies across its international operations, we are uniquely poised to deliver significant economies of scale for customer benefit and delight. With this further reduction in roaming rates and attractive data rates we hope to better serve the ever increasing number of Sri Lankans travelling abroad.”
The new roaming rates will be available for customers to enjoy and benefit till 30 September 2012 – a period that is considered as peak for outbound travel.
