Wijewickrama said the Sri Lankan ICT industry has been maintaining a steady growth during the last decade and currently stands as the fourth largest foreign exchange earner with over $ 600 million annual revenue generated and over 70,000 well paid work force in the industry. The industry is striving to achieve $ 1 billion revenue target and 100,000 employees in the sector by 2016, demonstrating high growth potential in the local ICT industry.
Wijewickrama is the Managing Director of Sala Enterprises, established in 1992 and has successfully completed 22 years in the Sri Lankan IT market. Within a very short period of time, SALA has reached new heights, entering the market with high quality IT products.
Sala Enterprises success was mainly attributed for introducing the latest technology to Sri Lanka and making it available to the average consumer. Today Sala is ranked as one of the best among the market leaders in the computer field and holds a customer base of over 5,000, comprising Government ministries, banks, communication service providers, hospitals, mercantile sector organisations and private individuals as well today.
Wijewickrama has a proven track record and has won the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award, in addition to many international and local awards. He was also a former lecturer at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
“FITIS was established with the purpose of giving a much-needed focal point for the ICT industry in the island. During the past 26 years, it has successfully implemented many fruitful programs, which have been successfully carried out to enhance ICT usage and to create a continual growth in the employment opportunities available with the ICT sector,” Wijewickrama said.
FITIS membership is comprised of several chapters; Sri Lanka Association for the Software Industry (SLASI), Sri Lanka Computer Vendors’ Association (SLCVA), Association of Computer Training Organizations (ACTOS), Licensed Internet Service Providers Association (LISPA), and Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). FITIS, which has been actively contributing towards changing the landscape of Sri Lanka’s ICT industry during last two decades, has many ‘firsts’ and ‘bests’ to its credit.
SLASI, which was established in 1992, is comprised of 50 software development organisations and is the national organisation representing the software industry in Sri Lanka. SLCVA, established in 1988, is an association with 88 members representing computer hardware vendors. It organises awareness seminars for the general public. ACTOS was established in 1991. It provides membership to companies engaged in the business of providing education and training in information technology. Current membership stands at 28 including all well recognised institutions in Sri Lanka.
LISPA is registered as an Association under the Companies Act of Sri Lanka comprising of all licensed Internet service providers. Presently there are six registered members at LISPA. Last but not least, ISACA is a professional body of individuals with a common interest in information systems governance, audit, control and security. It was founded in 1996 by a small group of individuals. Association membership has now grown to more than 100,000 members around the world.
