Commonwealth ICT deliberations at NITC 2014

Sri Lanka graciously hosted Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November 2013. Continuing the engagement with the commonwealth, and considering the relevance of the CHOGM 2013 theme ‘Growth Equity and Inclusive Development’, Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) has taken steps to facilitate commonwealth wide deliberations at its National Information Technology Conference2014 (NITC 2014) – ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’. The conference organised in collaboration Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Telecommunication and IT Sri Lanka, Ministry of External Affairs Sri Lanka and Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) is supported by London based Commonwealth Telecommunication Organization (CTO). NITC 2014 will be inaugurated on 25 August 2014 at 4:30 p.m. at the BMICH Main Conference Hall with the participation of several ICT ministers of commonwealth member nations, telecommunication and ICT policy makers and technology leaders from Sri Lanka and commonwealth member countries. The main conference will be held on 26 and 27 August at The Kingsbury Hotel Colombo. Professor Tim Unwin, Secretary General of CTO and Chairman of Commonwealth Scholarship Commission will be the key note speaker at the Conference. A seminar on Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) will be organised by the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organization (CTO) adding great value to NITC 2014 participants. Under the theme ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’, NITC 2014 conference is expected to create a platform for discussion on the innovative use of ICT to create better solutions under main conference tracks of Innovations for ICT4ID, Smart Societies, E-governance, Security, Big Data, Cloud Computing and Social Media. CSSL has received conference papers from several commonwealth countries including papers from Commonwealth Secretary General’s office in order to facilitate commonwealth wide deliberations .The conference will further elaborate CHOGM 2013 ICTA related declarations in order to be brought to their fulfillment Several ICT ministers from the Commonwealth have been invited and expected to participate at the inauguration ceremony and parallel roundtable discussions on ‘ICT for Inclusive Development beyond MDGs in the Commonwealth’. By facilitating a dialogue among ICT professionals across the commonwealth on the use of ‘ICT for Inclusive Development’, the NITC-2014 conference will finalise a declaration ‘ICT for Inclusive Development beyond MDGs: Policy Objectives and Targets for Vision 2020 in the commonwealth’. The declaration and the recommendations are intended to be submitted to The President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa for His Excellency’s consideration to inform the Commonwealth agenda which could be further discussed at various Commonwealth fora, eventually leading to a Commonwealth consensus. Organised for the 32nd consecutive year, the NITC involves key ICT decision makers in private and public sector together to share and discuss latest trends in Information and Communication Technology. These learnings are usually adopted in their respective businesses or institutions for higher productivity, greater competitive advantage or customer centric service delivery. The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL), established in 1976, represents ICT professionals in the country. CSSL is a member of the South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC) and International Federation for Inform-ation Processing (IFIP) and is the proud organiser of NITC.
