The 1000th Nenasala (wisdom outlet) will be inaugurated at the Galigamuwa Bisovela Rajamaha Buddhist Temple on Thursday (25), to officially complete the 1000 Nenasala Project.   The ‘1000 Nenasala project’ was launched and conducted under the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. President Rajapaksa inaugurated the ‘1000 Nenasala Project’ with the launch of the first Nenasala at the Kataragama Kirivehera (Temple) on 1 January 2005 when he was Prime Minister. The main aim of President Rajapaksa in setting up these Nenasalas is to empower rural folk through ICT, the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) said. According to the ICTA, the 1000th Nenasala will be equipped with modern ICT equipment and infrastructure. Nenasalas have been set up island-wide including the North and East, located in places of worship such as temples, kovils, mosques and churches as well as in public places. The Nenasala Project won the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Award for the Best Rural It Project this year. This project was adjudged the best out of 150 from 110 countries. The Census and Statistics Department revealed in its survey reports that Nenasalas had provided massive impetus for the increase of the country’s ICT literacy. Following Friday’s inauguration, the Nenasala Convention will be held with the participation of all Nenasala owners and operators island-wide under the patronage of Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.
